Growing old shouldn’t be dramatic or unnecessarily stressful. It can be a graceful, evolving and fulfilling process. It shouldn’t be considered a burden or a cause for worry to anyone as it is the natural order of life. While you can’t really predict anything in life for certain, it is wiser to plan your retirement well at hand.

According to the report released by the Department of Health in 2016, 15% of Australia’s population (around 3.7 million people) are aged 65 years and above. Naturally, as you grow older, you require more support and care. The aged care system in Australia offers three main types of service; Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), Home Care and Residential Care. The aged care system in Australia offers three main types of service; Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), Home Care and Residential Care. CHSP supports individuals to live an independent life at home and to pay for services they use. While CHSP and Home Care sound very similar in how the aged remain in their home and are looked after by carers, the difference occurs in how the aged receive this service. Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACAT) helps senior citizens gain access to home care and residential care services. Aged care expands to include elders with dementia as well as various forms of disability.

More people prefer to retire in their own homes rather than live at a residential care facility even though the facilities are run very well. They believe that they are able to have the best quality of life at home where they are closer to their loved ones.

Our Role in Aged Care

We at Mycarer share this sentiment in our belief that retirement at home is an appealing option when the right kind of aged or disability care is easily accessible. However, selecting a carers is an extremely serious decision. It is a personal choice which involves allowing a carers into your home and your life. Careseekers may expect support in many of the daily activities at home such as showering, dressing, eating, medication and depending on their needs, other household duties such as cleaning and shopping. Similarly, carers are passionate people who are proud of what they do and take their job very seriously as it is a big responsibility to take care of someone. Our aim is to connect these two parties on a social level platform and make it a great experience for everyone. We work towards both parties being happy with their decision and gaining mutual benefits. Mycarer allows the care seekers and carers to get to know each other before establishing the services, and once the service period is over, both parties can rate each other and make recommendations.

Caregiving is not just a job, but a passion for the people engaging in it solely because of the human interaction and compassion it requires. Even with the qualifications, one cannot do it unless they have their “heart in the right place”. Many personal carers divide their time between several careseekers and having a Mycarer profile allows them to display their available times so that careseekers can choose depending on their need. Duration and nature of the service can be personalised according to the individual needs of the careseekers too. All carers signing up on our platform require a Level 3 Certification in Caregiving. There is a general tendency of aged care workers to also support disabled elders as the two roles go hand in hand. Child care however, requires carers to specialise in childhood education and psychology. The flexibility offered by our platform to select carers as well as customising the requirement based on factors such as availability make it an attractive option for both parties.

More often, it is not the aged person themselves who are actively searching for a carers, but close family or relatives. Considering the many options available and the level of service you expect, it is better to first go through a home care provider such as mycarer and make a choice that will ensure the best quality of life for your loved ones.
